5 Must-See Spanish Movies
So, this doesn’t so much apply to Barcelona as it does to all of Spain. Besides reading books on Barcelona and Spain prior to a visit, another good way to learn about Spanish culture is through watching movies made in Spain, or by Spanish directors. There are tons of fabulous Spanish movies. Spain is no Hollywood, but it does manage to put out quite a few films a year. Look for some of these with subtitles or practice your Spanish watching them without subtitles.

Five Spanish Films:
1 - Mar Adentro by Alejandro Amenabar. Touching and beautiful film with Javier Bardem in the lead. Anything by Alejandro Amenabar is worth watching.
2 – Volver by Almodovar. A recent Almodovar film and a great one. Say what you will about Penelope Cruz – not everyone likes her – she’s great in this drama.
3 – Elegy is not a Spanish film in that it is in English, but it was made by Spanish director Isabel Coixet and stars famous Spanish beauty, Penelope Cruz.
4- Sex y Lucia by Julio Medem is one of my favorites. Graphic and at times a bit hard to follow, this film is a must-see. Set in Madrid and on the gorgeous Formentera Island.
5 – Abre los Ojos by Alejandro Amenabar again. This film is what the English film, Vanilla Sky was based on. Alejandro Amenabar worked on this film along with writer-director Mateo Gil.
