Airport: Barcelona’s New Metro Line
Soon, there will be one more line added to ’s eight current! This is very exciting business for avid Metro riders like me. Without a car or a motorcycle, the Metro is the fastest way around the city.

Though not opened yet, the new Orange Line called L9, will be open ‘soon’. This is what I was told, at least, by city officials. Soon can mean a lot of things in Spain. I’d say we’ll see the new line come Jan-Feb 2010, but who knows, I guess it could come sooner.
The really exciting part of L9 is that it goes to the Hurray! Right now you have to take the Airport Bus for about 7 Euros or a series of RENFE trains to the airport for about 5 Euros. It’s a hassle. This new Metro line will make getting from the airport easier for locals and tourist alike.
L9 mostly curves around the city and avoids its center, so those who want to take it to the airport will have to take one of the center lines (L4 or L1) to a stop and change. Even with this change though, the L9 is still a good deal because going by Metro is fast and inexpensive.
Some L9 Facts:
- It is the longest Metro line in Europe!
- It will have 44kms of tunnel!
- They estimate that 350,000 people will use the line per day!
- It was estimated to cost 6,500 Million!
I can’t wait to ride L9. Thanks City Government (Govern de la Generalitat de Catalunya), for completing a truly useful public project.
