Boulangerie: A local favorite
Boulangerie means “bakery” in French, and the simplicity of the word and delectable baked goods at the Boulangerie at 1495 South King Street (cross street: Kalakaua Ave) has been delighting locals for years.
This specialty bakery serves up special breads and treats with a Korean-French flair. I paid my first visit a few days ago, and the peanut butter bread and mochi bread were absolutely heavenly. There’s an incredible array of Asian cakes as well as a healthy selection of coffees and teas.
Some customers have complained about the high prices, but if I assure you the breads, cookies, cakes, and chocolate croissants are well worth it. Prices range from $1.25 to $2.50 for their Asian influenced pastries. Cellophane bags of cookies range from $3.00 to $9.00. In their display case a tempting array of cakes range from $19.00 to $35.00. Ever popular are gift boxes & baskets ranging from a modest $5.00 to elaborate assortments for $35 to $45.
Boulangerie opens at 7 AM Monday through Saturday, closing at 8 PM during the week and 7 PM on Saturday. They are closed on Sundays. There are two tiny tables inside for those who prefer to dine in, but most come and go with the tide — and there’s always a steady stream of dedicated customers.
