Quick Guide to L.A. Sports
New to Los Angeles? Or maybe you’re just new to L.A. sports. Either way, here is a quick guide that will help you keep Kobe straight from Manny.
L.A. Lakers- a team with 15 NBA championships, including one this past 2008-2009 season, and home to one of Los Angeles’ favorite players possibly of all time, Kobe Bryant. They share the Staples Center with the other L.A. basketball team, the Clippers. Notable players: Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum
L.A. Clippers - the “other” Los Angeles basketball team, the Clippers have had only six winning seasons in it’s team’s history. Notable players: Baron Davis, Cnhris Kama
Baseball
L.A. Dodgers – the team who missed out on the World Series this year by losing to the Philadelphia Phillies, has been had some big news over the past few years by acquiring Manny Ramirez, the controversial player from the Boston Red Sox, and ex-Yankees manager Joe Torre. Notable players: Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Russell Martin, Rafael Furcal
L.A. Angels of Anaheim – not actually located in Los Angeles but in Anaheim, the Angels still pull some fans from the L.A. area. Fans were hoping for a “freeway World Series” until the Dodgers lost to the Phillies and the Angels lost to the Yankees, booting them both from the playoffs this season. Notable players: Vladamir Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Bobby Abreu, John Lackey
Hockey
L.A. Kings - a team who has won their division only in 1990-91, advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1992-93 season only to lose. Notable players: Alexander Frolov, Matt Greene, Dustin Brown
Soccer
L.A. Galaxy – has won the MLS Cup in 2002 and 2005, and the U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and 2005. In 2007, the Galaxy signed English superstar David Beckham. Notable players: David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Donovan Ricketts
While Los Angeles doesn’t have a professional football team yet, often times the University of Southern California football team (also known as USC) has a reputation of being L.A.’s unofficial football team.
