Turning to the Streets, Kolkata, India

There is a reoccurring theme ever-present on the streets of Kolkata; one where the roots of struggle and poverty often come from the same tree. Of Kolkata’s 15 million people, a significant portion of the population has turned to informal business as a way of providing for themselves as well as their families. Street vendors selling anything from fresh fruit to shoe repairs while others rely solely on pan handling and handicraft sales on street corners. Furthermore, many women are subject to domestic / marital violence forcing them to turn to the streets in seeking out a form of livelihood. There is a sense of despair as well as hope in these bright hearts as their will to succeed despite the inherent hurdles that remain ubiquitous throughout Kolkata.
