Miami Gears Up for the Snow Sport World

Don’t be too mesmerized by all those guys you see boarding the waves in along some stretches of the coast off Miami.  At this time of year, there are also plenty of people around town all ready to gear up for winter sport travel to the leading snow destinations in the country and abroad.  Judging by the presence of some high-end retailers who can provide the latest of anything for the slopes before you depart Miami International, that passion for the snow remains just as strong now whatever else may happen in the economy.  Specialty travel endures in all times.

Among those we met at the recent SNOW a la Mode winter sport fashion event at the Viceroy Miami, are several well-established local snow sport outfitters and retailers that have a fierce following among snow-loving Miami area urbanites. If you are headed to the slopes this season or know someone searching for an expert in snow sport with everything they might  need to stock up on before leaving Florida, consider any of the following:

Peter Glenn – with store locations in both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Peter Glenn has just celebrated over a half century of supplying ski gear and wear to the public.  We asked them what is popular or new this season at their outlets  in apparel or gear for anyone still shopping for the 2009-2010 winter season.  Their highlights:  new skiwear from Kjus and Bogner  looks incredible and has been very popular in the pre-season, along with gloves and hats from Ed Hardy.  In snowboards the Lib Tech Skate Banana BTX   stands out with its rocker board design that makes the board easy to ride in all conditions.

Peter Glenn is also doing their annual in-store Winter Preview event from Wednesday November 11th to Sunday November 15th, making this period prime time for skiers and snowboarders to come in the store and check out the latest for the upcoming Winter.  During the event there is in-store specials on new clothing and equipment along with three specific events:

  • Wednesday is the Wheel of Savings where customers spin the wheel and save up to 40% on their purchase
  • Thursday is Woman’s Day, for every $300 spent on ladies clothing and equipment the customer will get a $50 gift card that can be used from Nov. 27th to December 24th, 2009.
  • Saturday is Family Day, save 20% on all kids ski and snowboard jackets, pants and 1-piece suits.

Look for Peter Glenn locations locally in:

Sun & Ski Sports - ( 8789 S.W. 132nd St., Kendall); The nice people at Sun & Ski may well be one of the best kept secrets of suburban Miami.  But given that they stock for a wide range of other activities like water sport, running and fitness, cycling and skating, it’s not just in the winter season that their store is humming.  For the snow-bound customer, they have a wide range of product names — Burton, Dynastar, Elan, K2, Fischer, Nils, and others for accessories.

Their current pre-season ski sale offers up to 50 percent off on the top name ski and snowboard apparel and gear in store.

It all goes to show that “snowbird” can mean a traveler headed towards the white stuff rather than one trying to escape it — another interesting feature about Miami as a city that always like to move in its own direction.

That green snow gear is great! Next time I’m in Miami I’d love to shop Peter Glenn so I can show the jacket off at St. Lary for winter skiing in the Pyrénées.
