Bartlett Lake, an Oasis in the Desert
Just because you’re in the desert doesn’t mean there’s no water. On the contrary, Arizona has over 30 lakes for residents to boat, jet ski and enjoy other water activities.

is a Verde Valley River Reservoir Lake located 30 miles northeast of Phoenix. Bartlett has a boatable surface area of 2,815 acres – perfect for boating and skiing enthusiasts alike. A great day trip, you can also enjoy picnicking, hiking, swimming and campground space. Fishermen have an opportunity to catch Bass, Catfish, Small and Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill.

The drive to Bartlett, a 14 mile winding road on Bartlett Dam Road offers amazing views of sahuaros, boulders, and other lush desert plants that are indicative of the Sonoran desert. Bartlett Lake is actually located in the , where visitors may see mule deer, bald eagles and coyotes. On my first trip to Bartlett, I was introduced to a , officially known as a Collared Peccary. Javelinas are the only wild, pig-like animal found in the U.S. All I can say is, they are so ugly … they’re cute!

A 21’ Sea Ray and a 20’ pontoon boat are available for rent, both accommodating eight passengers. If you have a large group, consider renting a 45’ pontoon boat for the day. The boat can accommodate up to 35 passengers and has all the amenities of home. The rental fee is $1,200 for the day. Directions:
Bartlett Lake is in Carefree. Take the 101 freeway North and exit on Pima Road. Head North on Pima Road all the way to Cave Creek Road in Carefree. Turn right on Cave Creek Road and head 5 ½ miles to Bartlett Dam Road. It’s a beautiful 14 mile drive on this road to Bartlett Lake.
