Disney, NASA Announce Student Contests With Out-Of-This-World Prizes
In celebration of of 15 galactic months on board the International Space Station, Walt Disney World Resort held a “Welcome Home” ticker-tape parade down Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom. Coinciding with the celebratory parade, NASA and Disney Parks have teamed up to conduct two student contests aimed to encourage interest in the fields of science and math.
A Mission Patch Design Challenge for children age 6-12, will allow students the opportunity to design a mission patch to commemorate Buzz’s historic space journey in the tradition of the mission patches designed by NASA astronauts to symbolize their space missions and flight accomplishments for over 40 years.
From now through November 6, students and parents can go online,, and download materials to design a custom Buzz mission patch. Among the choices are design templates and artwork inspired by previous NASA badges as well as NASA and Disney creative elements and fun add-ons.
Along with the patch students must also submit a 100-word essay explaining their creation. The student with the most creative mission patch and essay, will win a trip for four to Walt Disney World Resort and a VIP tour of . Additional information and rules are also available at .
The second contest, the International Space Station Student Experiment Competition, challenges students in 5th-8th grade to devise experiments that will be conducted aboard the space station. The winning 12 experiments will be performed by station crew members and videotaped for the winning schools. Information on this competition is available at .
Both contests builds on NASA’s educational goals of encouraging students to learn about space flight and the science surrounding the NASA programs. As someone who works in the educational field, I couldn’t be happier with this combination of education and fun provided by Disney and NASA.
