Historic Images of Washington, DC

Take a history trip through the Washington, DC of old, dating back to the 1800s with a copy of the new book, Historic Photos of Washington, D.C. Monuments, by Tracey Gold Bennett.

BookThe 205-page photo book presents close to 200 black and white images of major monuments, memorials, and historic sites in the District of Columbia.  The historical images, most sourced form the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian and the National Archives highlight the Washington Monument, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, the US Capitol Building and other famous locations around Washington, DC.

Some of the images capture the monuments while under construction, other at their dedications, while other photographs show huge crowds at major historical events, speeches and rallies, including the Civil Rights march of 1963, a suffragette movement parade, even a fire at the Capitol Building in 1930 that did serious damage to the House Document Room.

Other images simply capture tourists posing in front of monuments or enjoying the annual cherry blossoms near the Jefferson Memorial.

Surprisingly, several images from the 1920s show children swimming, ice skating and sailing toy boats when these activities were still allowed in the Reflecting Pool.

The author, Tracey Gold Bennett, is a freelance Washington, DC news reporter.  She will be signing her book at Neiman Marcus at 5300 Wisconsin Ave., NW in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 17, 2009  between 1:00 and 4:00 pm.

Historic Photos of Washington D.C. Monuments is available from Amazon for $28.76.
