2022 Winter Olympics in Denver?
Since did not get the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, this means Denver could be a viable candidate for an upcoming Winter Olympics. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter said that Denver is still very interested in bringing the Olympic games to our city.
When could we possibly see Denver put in a bid for such a huge event? The earliest we could bid for the Olympics is for the 2022. The USOC said that the U.S. can not bid on the 2018 Olympics because the deadline is October 15th, which is way too soon to get a proposal together.
The race for the 2022 Olympics begins in 2013 and KieAnn Brownell, president of the Metro Denver Sports Commission, said “I think we can be ready by then”.
According to the , Denver could be a tough sell.
Denver might be a tough sell in any year, however. The IOC awarded the city the 1976 Winter Games, but in 1972, voters soundly rejected a measure to pay for them, citing environmental and financial concerns. The vote was 514,228 to 350,964.
Attempts to get a Winter Olympics for Colorado began in 1954 when Aspen and Colorado Springs made a joint effort for the 1960 Games.
After the 1972 election, the state continued to bid on the Games, including the 2002 Olympics that were awarded to Salt Lake City.
