Sausages R Us – a bratwurst shop in Smithfield
Missing the Oktoberfest and have to stay in ? Don’t worry, you can get your fix of German beer and sausages in too.
Just opposite Smithfield market, at the bottom of Cowcross Street and St John Street, is [], a tiny shop that serves up various varieties of wurst in the nice simple German way – with rye bread, sauerkraut and potato cubes.
You can get Bratwurst. Weisswurst – that’s a southern German thing; I don’t do Weisswurst, personally. Rindwurst, which is beef, or Kaesewurst, or even Currywurst – authentically German in the same way Chicken Tikka Masala is authentically British. All the meat comes from a family-owned organic supplier in Rhineland-Pfalz – no rubbish here.
Now I was still not quite convinced that this was completely authentic. Smithfield is the big meat trading market for , but it’s not renowned for its German food. So I looked at the beer list. Oh, they do Frueh Koelsch from Cologne. That’s lovely stuff, and you don’t see it very often in England. And they do Schneider wheat beer, and Paulaner, and some other proper German beers.
I was nearly, nearly convinced now, but there was one thing I needed to know. What kind of mustard?
The nice German chap behind the bar smiled. ‘We have ordinary German mustard,’ he said, showing me the bottle. I looked at it, stony faced. He grinned. ‘And we have the sweet Bavarian mustard’.
Well, that was it. The real stuff. I’m convinced!
A full sausage meal will cost you £6 (without the beer, but with the mustard). And this shop is really open all hours – 11-1130 every weekday, 24 hours on Friday, and 11-1 am on Saturday. It’s even open Sunday afternoons and evenings (till 9).
