Walking with Dinosaurs…“That Was Awesome!!”
This week I saw at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.
The show takes you back millions of years ago on a journey to the time of dinosaurs.
Starting with the Triassic Period (245-208 million years ago) when the first small dinosaurs began to evolve, the story shows the evolution and growth of the massive creatures through the Creataceous Period (144-65 million years ago).
Taking us on the tour through time was Huxley, the on-stage narrator and resident paleontologist, who explained the history of dinosaurs and their evolution, from period to period, as we were introduced to each one.
Each dinosaur is presented in a historic vignette, such as coping with its environment, finding food, raising its young, or fighting off predators.
The show’s stars are obviously the animatronic dinosaurs — about a dozen species, all life-size, which is truly impressive when they stand close to Huxley, and you get an idea of their true gargantuan bulk. The shear size of these robotic creatures is impressive, many dwarfing the largest land mammal of today, the elephant. It’s easy to forget there sheer size as the walk around the hockey-rink sized stage.
The dinosaurs, some with humans inside, others fully remote controlled by the “voodoo puppeteers,” are amazing. They move in lifelike manners, their skin appears to be real, their roars deep and loud and other than some well disguised bases under the largest dinos, they truly seem to have come alive. The show’s soundtrack is fantastic as well.
The shows is geared mostly for children, and even younger kids shouldn’t be frightened. I was surrounded by children of all ages and they seems to have a ball. The show’s overall illusion is very realistic and effective, especially when the show’s star, the the protective Tyrannosaurus Rex and her baby makes their entrance.
You and the kids will learn a few things about dinosaurs, have a few laughs form the witty narration, and should be duly impressed after getting a glimpse into the time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Here’s a .
As the show ended, a middle-school boy sitting behind me stated enthusiastically, “That was awesome!!” And it was.
