La Merce 2009: Barcelona’s Biggest Fiesta

I’ve been going on about fiestas all summer long, because frankly it’s just one after another from May to August. However, with school back in session and vacations over, the festivities are winding down. Just as it all starts to go a bit quiet, that’s when Barcelona says, ‘Wait, not so fast! I’ve got one more fiesta for you yet!’. This is Barcelona’s biggest bash, called La Merce, consisting of one whole week of non-stop fireworks, dining, talks, parades and lots of music.

And it’s FREE. Yep, free. La Merce is Barcelona’s Patron Saint, and so the city is obliged to put on a huge free-for-all party in her honor. Every year La Merce gets bigger, better (?), longer, and more expensive. If you do nothing else the week of the 23rd to the 28th, be at La Merce (in the center of the city) in the evening to hear one of the many bands that will be playing all over.
