Bagan Pinang by-election on Sunday 11th October 2009

Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) had announced that Bagan Pinang by-election will be held on 11th October 2009 where as the nomination day had been fixed on 3rd October 2009.

One interesting fact to notice here, the by-election for Bagan Pinang, a BN-controlled state seat in Negeri Sembilan, had been fixed on a Sunday, which is a non-working day.

Compare this upcoming by-election to previous few by-elections in PR-controlled seats. For example, the most recent Manik Urai by-election was held on a weekday. So were the two-bukits and a batang by-elections which were held on the same day, also on a weekday.

Bagan Pinang will be the ninth by-election after the March 8 general-election in 2008. The state seat in Negeri Sembilan fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Azman Mohammad Noor of Barisan Nasional who had passed away on Sept 4th 2009.

According to the EC records as of Sept 4, the Bagan Pinang constituency has 13,664 registered voters, including 4,604 voters, compring 8,577 Malay voters (62.77%), 2,834 Indians (20.74%), 1,498 Chinese (10.96%) and 755 others (5.54%).

Pakatan Rakyat had agreed that PAS will contest this by-election. PKR had issued a stern warning that any of its member who stands as an independent candidate will be sacked from the party.
