Monkey Temple, Kathmandu, Nepal
The city of Kathmandu is dusted with temples, predominantly those of Hindi and Buddhist faiths, and have been drawing in foreign and local crowds for years with an open door policy. No matter your background or belief, these sacred places of worship are welcoming to all.
After having summited a steep climb of some 500 steps, the Swayambhunath Stupa or monkey temple as referred to locally, reveals it’s golden tip. The holy shrine adopted the name of monkey temple as there are a number of monkeys living on the temple grounds.
Surrounded by homes, shops and the ubiquitous prayer flag strewn from the stupa’s top, the fusion of money making and devotion provides an awe inspiring experience for all those willing to pay the Rs 100 entrance fee…money well spent if simply for the view.
