Tales from the Road: Calories don’t Count on Vacation

Like many hard-working (stop snickering) Americans, I went somewhere on Labor Day weekend. And pardon me for this cliché, but like a moth drawn to a flame, I was drawn to the beach. And honestly, there’s no better place to celebrate the unofficial end of summer than at the beach.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m on vacation, I tend to indulge some. But I’m good, because I tend to follow it up with either a long walk on the beach or extend time in the exercise room.

To me, there’s no better time to indulge than so at breakfast or perhaps even at lunch.

While on Hilton Head Island, S.C., I happily discovered two new places for treats and eats. Well, strike that statement and let me amend it. I meant to have said these two places are new to me.

On Saturday morning, I found myself eyeing the cases at Ronnie’s Bakery. Now is one of those local places that everyone should visit at least once. If you’re craving something sweet, Ronnie’s Bakery is the place for you. From cookies to cupcakes to donuts, I dare you to leave empty handed.

Afterwards purchasing a few treats, I left and headed toward Pineland Station in search of The French Bakery and Courtyard Cafe. They offer muffins, scones, turnovers and their specialty, almond croissants ($3.00), among other items. Just looking at the different items through the case, trust me when I tell you that you can’t wrong choosing any of them.

While I didn’t get breakfast here, I did return later to get lunch. I recommend the Croque-Monsieur ($5.50). There’s also baguette sandwiches; hot, filled croissants, quiches and more.

So, take it from me – the next time you’re on vacation, don’t worry about weighing or measuring food. Don’t count calories, either. There’s more than enough time for that. When you’re away, you are away; so go ahead and indulge on one of those days. You just never know what new places you might discover.
