Boston: Five Unforgettable New England Fall Experiences

Fall is a glorious season in New England. The days are warm, the evenings are cool. The trees are covered in bright  crimson, gold, and orange leaves. And the farmer’s markets are bursting with piles of apples and pumpkins.
  1. Go leaf peeping. Peak foliage season in and around Boston typically occurs around Columbus Day. Prime spots around the city include the Arnold Arboretum( 125 The Arborway, Jamaica Plain, 617-524-1718 )(Map) the Mt. Auburn Cemetery (580 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, 617-547-7105) (Map) and the Boston Common (Charles, Beacon, Tremont and Boylston Streets)(Map).
  2. Enjoy all that jazz at the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival, September 18-September 26. This is Boston’s largest outdoor festival, taking place over a 6-block area of Columbus Avenue (Map) and features national and local jazz, gospel and blues artists.
  3. Join the raucous crowds  at the Head of the Charles Regatta, Saturday October 17-Sunday, October 18 along the Cambridge side of the Charles River and cheer on your favorite crew team during this big-time international rowing event.
  4. For fun by the bushel, an apple picking outing in the country can’t be beat. Nashoba Valley Winery (92 Wattaquadock Rd., Bolton, 978-779-5521)  (Map) is located just an hour west of the city. Nashoba Valley Winery has a picturesque hill-top orchard setting , grows dozens of varieties of apples, and offers weekend tours of its award-winning wine making facilities.
  5. There isn’t a spookier city in America  than Salem, Massachusetts during the month of October. The city isn’t shy about it’s reputation as “Witch City” and its role in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.There are several witchy sights in town- among them the Salem Witch Museum (Washington Square, Salem, 978-744-1692) (Map) But the must-see Salem attraction  is the Peabody Essex Museum (East India Square, Salem, 978-745-9500 (Map) which features  a world-class collection of art and maritime artifacts that reflect Salem’s rich seafaring history.
