It’s September in the South
Just because summer is almost over, doesn’t mean fun has to be.
There’s so much going on in the South during September. From state fairs to arts festivals, the hardest part this month is deciding on what to do.
So, why not…
- eat. You’re in the South, so you know somebody somewhere is celebrating with some sort of (good) food item. Whether it’s shrimp in places like Dixon, Mo., Biloxi, Miss., Pensacola, Fla., and Yemassee, S.C., to crab soup in Annapolis, Md., to chicken in London, Ky., you know you won’t leave hungry. And even though it’s not a festival, don’t forget about Orlando’s Magical Dining Month.
- get outdoors. September brings the opening of corn mazes. Find your way out in such places as Schaefer’s Corn Maze in Conway, Ark., and Enchanted MAiZE by Rock City in Flintstone, Ga. There’s also the geocaching event going on in Habersham County, Ga.
- see some art. Discover new artists at the 40th Annual Fayette (Ala.) Arts Festival (Sept. 12), Atlanta (Ga.) Arts Festival (Sept. 12-13), and 36th Annual Catonsville (Md.) Arts and Crafts Festival (Sept 9-13).
- enjoy a region or state fair. If you’re ready for some cotton candy and midway attractions, the South won’t disappoint you during September. Choose from the Oklahoma State Fair in Oklahoma City (Sept. 17-27), Tennessee Valley Fair in Knoxville (Sept. 5-14), or North Carolina Mountain State Fair in Fletcher (Sept. 11-20).
- go on a road trip. Hit the road and visit such places as Oxford, Miss., or Havana, Fla. September can also be a great month to go rural or romantic for a weekend destination. And don’t forget about the 10 must-see places in 2009.
