Rembrandt’s Complete Works in Amsterdam

For the first time ever all works of Rembrandt are brought together in one exhibition.

Rembrandt is best known for de Nachtwacht (Night Watch), a huge painting which was even bigger before the sides were chopped off. It did not fit the allocated space in the Town Hall, now the Royal Palace, on Dam Square.

He is the master of chiaroscuro, light and shade which makes his paintings mysterious. He painted many self portraits which show how he developed from a young man into an old man. The last one he painted shortly before he died in 1669

Rembrandt belonged to a new generation of artists who depicted the world around them they way it actually was. That’s why his paintings are more realistic than the idealised portraits of his predecessors. He portrayed people the way they were and never hid their plainness. He established himself in Amsterdam and lived at Jodenbreestraat 4, now Rembrandt Museum.
