Budget friendly HK: Hong Kong Science Museum

As a little girl one of my fondest memories is of a class trip to the Hong Kong Science Museum. You’d think that after all these years you wouldn’t find a science museum that interesting but for just HKD25 entrance fee, this is definitely one of the best places to visit in Hong Kong.

All in all there are 500 exhibits on display in the permanent exhibition area, the most popular being the 22-meter high twin tower ‘Energy Machine’, which is the largest of its kind in the world. With 16 galleries that explore topics ranging from science and technology to transportation, food science, energy, computer, health and more, it’s a wonderful place to take children and the whole family.

One of my favourite parts of the museum is ‘The World of Mirrors’ exhibit. This is a permanent feature in the museum though they have new exhibits that take place every few months. In ‘The World of Mirrors’, you can enjoy the fun tricks that mirrors can do just by the way they’re positioned. Become a dwarf or a giant and take funny photos, or get lost in a forest maze of mirrors, and see your body vanish right before your eyes in some of the exhibit highlights. It’s a great experience for both kids and adults, plus it’s incredibly inexpensive!

A standard ticket is HKD25 and there are also group discounts of HKD17.5 for 20 or more people. A concessionary ticket is just HKD12.5 and is available only to full-time students, people with disabilities and senior citizens aged 60+. Children under 4 years of age (with supervision of an adult with ticket) get free admission. And every Wednesday is also FREE ADMISSION.

Summer is the busiest time because kids are out of school and the museum tends to have the best exhibits during that period. This year there’s a ‘Candy Unwrapped’ exhibit going on until 28 October, which has an extra HKD35 entrance fee. *Note: Not all exhibits have extra charge.
