Darwin in Argentina

Centro Cultural Borges is proud to present the unique historic photographic exhibition called “Darwin in Argentina”, which honors the renowned English scientist and his journey through Argentina.

The exhibition is organized in different themes: Darwin in Argentina; Darwin’s journey through Patagonia; the Theory of Evolution; the Beagle; and a series of illustrations that depict the influence of Darwin’s thoughts on other areas of culture.

The year 2009 has been declared as the Darwin Year worldwide, in celebration of the bicentennial of Darwin’s birthday, and sesquicentennial of publication of his book “The Origin of Species”.

In 1831, at only 22, Darwin embarked as a naturalist on the H.M.S. Beagle commanded by Captain Fitz Roy on a 5-year journey around the world. Between 1833 and 1835 Darwin visited Argentina as part of that trip. He registered the customs of its inhabitants, the features of its flora and fauna, the fossils, and the geological aspects of our territory. These data were fundamental for the development of his theory of evolution.
