It’s August in the South
For many of us, when August rolls around, summer is coming to an end.
However, we still have the weekends and if we’re lucky, maybe a three-day weekend as well to have fun.
So if you happen to be in the South during August, why not…
- celebrate. Pensacola, Fla., is turning 450 years old and you can join in on the fun August 13-15. Check back on Southern Byways for a more in-depth look at the city’s big birthday bash.
- find some treasures. August 6-9 is the 127 Corridor Yard sale. This mega yard sale, recognized as the world’s longest, extends 654 miles through four states.
- see some land or sea animals. August can be a great time to visit one of the many zoos or aquariums throughout the South.
- get outdoors. Stretch your muscles and skills by YOLO-boarding, kayaking, canoeing, swimming or tubing.
- go to the beach. Are you really surprised that I suggested this? Stake out your own personal stretch of sand in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia or Maryland.
- take a road trip. Hit the road to visit such places as Aiken, S.C., Independence, Mo., Shreveport, La., Corinth, Miss., or any of the other great towns/cities in the South.
- treat yourself (and/or your special someone and/or your family) and stay somewhere neat. Book a weekend at 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, Ky., or at Beach ‘N River in Foley, Ala.

Beach ‘N River also rents kayaks on the Bon Secour River. It’s a lot of fun.
