Ah Summer….Barcelona is a great city in the summer (except for how smelly it is….and if you’ve been here in August and walked down the Gothic streets, you know what I am talking about) because of all the parties. It’s no wonder Barcelona has the ‘fiesta-fever’ reputation it does, honestly, the city does know how to have a good time.

One of the many ways Barcelona’s residents let their hair down is at their local neighborhood parties or ‘fiesta major’ in Catalan. Every borough in the city has its own party, some better than others, but all with music, food, drinks and people from the neighborhood of all ages. Of course, everyone is invited. One neighborhood puts on the party, but those from any neighborhood can attend.

A few weeks ago I mentioned a similar party in Barceloneta, and this week the fiesta major is in Poble Sec. A residential zone, I must admit that I don’t often head over to Poble Sec (although there are some good spots worth checking out there). Going to Poble Sec’s fiesta major is a good way to see a part of the city you may not otherwise see, and have some clean, cheap fun.

Did I say cheap? Si! These parties are for the community and therefore priced accordingly. Sure, there’s nothing too fancy about the fiesta major at Poble Sec, and they will only be serving beer and questionable mixed drinks, but still! All the music and family entertainment is free, and there will be several stages set up around the neighborhood.

Poble Sec is on the green metro line, so get off there and follow the crowd or the sound of music. Consider checking out local band The Lowdown which plays Rockabilly Swing from 11pm to 12 midnight at the stage across from Bar Bodega Salto.
