BCN Restaurant – Why Ugarit is a Must

Ugarit has three things going for it: good eats, nice wait staff and a Gracia location.

I was taken aback when I went into Ugarit last Tuesday and was greeted by a smiling man who said, ‘Table for two, right over here please.’

‘What’s this?’ I thought to myself, and then remembered that it was called service, something I’ve grown to live without in Barcelona. Sorry if it’s a bit harsh, but it’s true. Barcelona excels in many ways, but service, especially in restaurants, is not one of them.

Happily we followed the smiling man and sat at a table for two which I decided I didn’t like. Usually changing tables might cause a ruckus, but I called the waiter over and asked to sit in the corner booth. ‘Certainly!’ he said, without rolling his eyes once. ‘I like this place,’ I told my friend.

We ordered hummus and pita and a couple of beers, which set us back €11.00. Ugarit serves Syrian dishes which are fresh and tasty. This restaurant’s service is fast, friendly and inexpensive for what it is. Ugarit has three locations in Gracia, one of Barcelona’s hippest zones, famous for its lively squares and pub nightlife.

When we left, I left a tip, which is not common in Spain, but I wanted to let the guys at Ugarit know just how big a difference a smile and ‘hola’ make when you’re out to eat.
