Restaurant Review: Guajillo’s

Among the hundreds of Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, many of them are Tex-Mex. However, Guajillo’s is real, authentic Mexican food and it’s top-notch.

This casual restaurant offers delicious food, lunch specials, friendly service and reasonable prices. Though it may be crowded at peak times, it’s worth the short wait.

The atmosphere is very casual at Guajillo’s. You seat yourself at one of the wooden tables inside or on the outdoor patio. There is a bar with a variety of ice cold Mexican beers, margaritas and other drinks.

The menu consists of several fish and shrimp appetizers, as well as three types of soup, including their famous Fideo Soup made with tomato broth. You can also choose from pasta, tacos, vegetarian dishes, and a dozen or so Mexican specialties.

The tortilla chips and salsa are served upon your arrival, along with lime and salt. Their salsa is excellent and the chips are thin, hot and not too salty.

Usually I have the Tacos Alambre, which is thinly sliced pork loin and sirloin steak with onion, bacon and poblano peppers served over corn tortillas.

One thing that you shouldn’t miss is Guajillo’s guacamole — it’s the best that I’ve had in the city.

Guajillo’s lunch specials are the biggest bargain. Served Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 3:00pm, the specials come with tortilla or Fideo soup, rice, beans and your choice of seven entrees. At $5.95, you can’t beat this deal. Guajillo’s also has a convenient drive-thru if you are in a hurry.

Many people come to Guajillo’s for the homemade desserts, which include flan, arroz con leche (rice pudding) and tres leches cake.
