A Visit to Piha
Five of us were in Auckland recently to take in the first of the two ‘Simon & Garfunkle’ concerts at the Vector Arena.
Arriving earlyish on Saturday morning from our home base in the South Island we hired a reliable but less than glamorous ‘el cheapo’ rental car from Ace Car Rentals at the airport, dropped of our bags at our downtown digs and went exploring out West.
After a small navigational glitch we were soon winding up through the Waitakeres on our way to the famous surf beach of Piha. I’d forgotten how far it was and amid cries of ‘are we nearly there yet?’ from my impatient (all female) cargo, we eventually spiralled down into Piha and strolled amid the showers down the famous black sand beach. Despite the somewhat inclement weather there were still a few hardy surfers checking out the flat (for Piha) surf.
Piha is set in a particularly beautiful, wild and rugged coastscape and you can see why so many people find this wonder of nature such a compelling place to visit even when a paddle let alone a swim is risking hypothermia!
