Tegel Airport to be Blocked by Taxi Drivers

If you’re flying into Berlin next Monday, 15th June, you might find it a little tougher to get into the city. Taxi drivers are staging a strike at Tegel airport from 9am to 1.30pm, before heading down to their protest rally at Brandenburg Gate.

They’re protesting an new fifty cent tarif for pickups and drop offs to the city’s airports (Tegel and Schoenefeld). While they can demand this back off passengers, they are worried that this, combined with the general taxi fare increase that’s coming in in July, will drive potential customers to public transport. They’re also, it appears, kicking up a stink at the airport putting extra demands on them: only wanting clean cars there, the ability for passengers to pay with credit or debit cars, and drivers who can speak English.

It’s not clear at the moment what effect this will have on outgoing flights, but I would reckon with potential problems if you aim to get there by taxi. There are buses, the X9, which leaves from Zoologischer Garten and can also be picked up at € test

    Jacinta,
Thanks for this information. I’ll pass it on to my sister who is going to Berlin on Monday. We have had the same problem at Schiphol, Amsterdam airport. Taxis in Amsterdam are even worse because they refuse to go short distances. And since most distances in Amsterdam are short, tourists have to go by tram.
