African Penguins

Most tourists react the same when we suggest visiting the African Penguins also known as the Jack Ass Penguin. “What Penguins in Africa never… I never knew there were penguins in Africa of all places” Well there are and we love them too bits.A pair of African penguins, Boulders Beach

The African Penguins are fascinating creatures that have stolen the hearts of locals, tourists and captivated the minds of scientists. They were known as the Jackass Penguins because of the noise they make but they were recently renamed as the African Penguin one a few colonies of its kind in Africa. African Penguins

The most common places to see them are at Simonstown’s Boulders Beach just south Cape Town City Centre this is where you will find a large colony held within a reserve that is open to the public. Then you will see more on Robben Island they are run wild all over the place and are real characters. 

Then moving out of the Cape Metropole area you will find another colony in the Overberg area of the Western Cape in a small seaside town of Betty’s Bay. It is called Stoney point and it is small area managed by locals between 8:30am and 5pm however the best time of the day to experience these penguins at before 8am when they leave to go feeding at see and then after 5pm when they return from feeding all day.

African penguin with chick We found that the African Penguins in this area are quite different to those in the rest of Cape Town. They tend to come up to you and investigate us, humans.

They are truly delightful little creatures and a definite must see and experience them while you are in Cape Town.African Penguin Return from a day of Feeding
