Travel Tips for Saving Money in Edinburgh

Even though the pound is slightly down against major world currencies such as the US Dollar and Euro, the UK is still a somewhat expensive place to go. Add on top of that recession fears and the dreaded “credit crunch” (do we remember life before it?), and it can be somewhat daunting to plan a trip to Edinburgh. But here are a few tips to save you some dosh and enjoy a cheap (well, cheaper) stay in Edinburgh.

Walk
You obviously will need to take the Fly By Bus service from Edinburgh Airport, but otherwise just walk. Its doubtful that you’ll be staying in a hotel or B&B that far from the city centre, where all of the attractions are. Just wear comfy shoes and head out. The weather can be daunting at times, but that’s all part of the charm of the Edinburgh experience. Walking saves money on buses and taxis and is a good way to take in the historic architecture and get some fresh air.

Take advantage of Restaurant Deals
So many restaurants are offering deals at the moment. We highlighted the tea for two offer at O’Briens last week, but nearly every pub and restaurant in town has set course menus for dinner. One of my favourites is The Rutland (sit upstairs for the 3-course offer).  It’s not available every night and only for early diners, so check it out while doing your Princes Street shopping.

Plan Ahead or Travel Off Beak

Edinburgh is no different than other city – things book up in advance at busy times and you’ll spend more if you hit the rush. December (Hogmanay) and July/August (Festival time) are obviously the busiest times. Enjoy the springtime temps in May (next year maybe?) or brave the dreary winter of February and you’ll spend less and enjoy less crowds. The advantage of the shorter days in winter is that you can enjoy the city lit up so spectacularly at night, and you won’t feel so bad about curling up in a cozy pub or cafe for the evening.

    You’re welcome Sonya – anytime! :)

  • I traveled Edinburg after London, so it all seemed cheap:) However, I ended up staying in hostels, they were clean and lovely. Now I couldn’t do that becauswe of my son, but that’s a great way to go:)

Haha – Yes Marina, Edinburgh seems like a cheap wee village after London. :-)

Sounds like you had a good time here though, thanks for stopping in!

I am headed there in another month so thanks for the tips – unfortunately it will be waaay on peak for the Fringe, but duly noted on set meals for two…if they’re offering that during Fringe! Thanks!

Many restaurants that have small kitchens actually run a festival menu – basically they take off choices that take too long. :) But yes you can still get good deals if, again, you eat dinner a little early. As Tesco says, every little helps!

  • Ride share says:

My recommendation is to use ride sharing services when travelling to Edinburgh. That way you avoid the hassle of peak time travel etc… For example: Lift to Woop Woop or Freewheelers

Also, you can find ride sharing on classifieds sites (e.g. craigs list), but they seem a bit more dodgier.
