‘Lovers’ Day’ in Rio
February 14 may be a distant romantic memory to Westerners, but here in Rio the city is gearing up for Dia dos Namorados (lovers’ day) – Brazil’s version of Valentine’s Day.
Celebrated on June 12th, the most romantic date on the Brazilian calendar is an excuse for those sultry, sexy cariocas (Rio natives) to turn the romance factor up to 11, and the stores are awash with perfumes, lingerie and other suitably sensual gifts.
Of course, as with Valentine’s Day, the best restaurants and hotels are booked up well in advance of the day itself. If you do choose to eat out with your loved one on Dia dos Namorados, call in advance (or have staff at your hotel or hostel call for you) to check you’ll be able to get a seat.
If the thought of fighting other couples for a seat in a candle-filled room doesn’t fill you with joy, try making the most of Brazil’s breathtaking natural beauty instead.
Head to your local supermarket or deli, stock up on tasty food and wine, and stick it all in a cool box before heading off to one of Rio’s many parks, gardens or other beauty spots for a romantic picnic.
Parque Lage, next to the botanical gardens, is a pleasant spot for a picnic, while Arpoador Rock, in between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, is wonderfully romantic at sunset. During daylight hours, the stretches of green surrounding Lagoa are also nice spots to enjoy a picnic for two; or head down to Rio’s quieter beaches, such as Grumari and Recreio, both to the west of the city.
If you happen to be single and in Rio, this could be your lucky night – the bars and clubs are sure to be packed with similarly single locals in search of a shot at lurve!
