Cinco de Mayo, Still a Time for Celebration

Some mistake Cinco del Mayo (Fifth of May) for Mexico’s Independence Day. But this is actually the date that marks Mexico’s victory over French invaders in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. No matter, it’s still a time for festivities and celebration throughout Los Angeles.

One of the best places to be on this occasion is at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, home to fabled Olvera Street with it’s festive-all-year vendors, cantinas, restaurants, and musicians. Dine on authentic cuisine, soak up a margarita or 10, and kick up your heels to the beat of mariachi music and other live entertainment.

The entire family will enjoy this colorful carnival that draws spectators from all over town. Best yet, admission is free. No need to worry about downtown or rush hour traffic either. Just hop the subway at your closest station and zip to the Union Station stop, which is right across the street from El Pueblo.
