New York Screening for Cinemalaya 2008 Finalist ‘Boses’ (Voice)
‘Boses’ (Voice), an indie film about healing and rebirth through music, is one of those outstanding movies that occasionally comes out of the Philippine entertainment industry.
‘Boses’ is the official film of the UNICEF Philippines 2009 Campaign to Stop Violence Against Children. It is about the friendship between Ariel (played by Coke Bolipata), a violin teacher with guilt issues, and Onyok (played by child prodigy Julian Duque), a musically gifted child. Onyok comes from an violent family background and has been made mute by his own father (played by Ricky Davao). Ariel and Onyok together find freedom through their music.
The film was a Cinemalaya finalist for 2008 and has garnered 12 nominations for the 2009 Golden Screen Awards, the Philippine version of the Golden Globes. The Golden Screen award ceremony will be April 30, 2009.
The film is not yet available in DVD, so the best bet to see it outside the Philippines would be at a screening like the one in New York on May 1. This particular event will also feature a meet-and-greet with Director Ellen Ongkeko Marfil and Ricky Davao, and a concert by Ricky Davao and guest Michael Dadap, Artistic Director of the Children’s Society Orchestra of NYC.

What is striking about ‘Boses’ is its combination of independent film-making, the introduction of two actors with no previous screen experience, a double helping of musical genius, a moving story, dedication to a cause, and critical acclaim. See it if you have the chance!
