The Passion of the DC Tango Festival

Tango coupleThe Washington DC Tango Festival celebrates the romance and passion of the hottest Latin dance – Tango.

One of the highlights of the 10-day celebration of tango music, dance and cinema is Two To Tango, featuring 30 world-class dancers, musician and singers from Argentina and Uruguay.

Ballroom Tango originated in the poorer, working-class districts of Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Initially considered immoral due to suggestive moves and passionate music, tango’s popularity grew rapidly, and by 1900, the dance style spread throughout European cities.

It’s rumored that the most recognized style of tango was first danced by Argentinean gauchos (cowboys) in bars and night clubs.  And since they hadn’t bathed after working on cattle ranches, their dance partners would hold their heads back, as the man led the woman in curving fashion around small, crowded night clubs.
