Visiting the San Antonio Zoo

The San Antonio Zoo is an ideal destination for families. Many exhibits, including Tiny Tots Nature Spot and Fun Farm Petting Zoo are geared toward young children. The San Antonio Zoo also offers special EdZoocation programs where children can enjoy camps and other activities at the zoo.

Over 3,500 animals representing over 600 species make their home at the San Antonio Zoo at 3903 North St. Mary’s Street in Brackenridge Park. (view location)

In 1914, the roots of the San Antonio Zoo were planted when Colonel George W. Brackenridge placed buffalo, elk, deer, monkeys, lions, and bears on land he had deeded over to the city in what is now known as Brackenridge Park.

The zoo opens at 9:00am daily. The entrance closes at 5:00pm and grounds close at 6:00pm.

Things Kids Shouldn’t Miss

Take a ride on the Brackenridge Eagle Train. Outside the zoo entrance near the main parking lot, catch the train from the Eagle Depot Station. It takes you on a 2/12 mile trip past the zoo and all around Brackenridge Park. The train fare is in addition to zoo admission.

The Fun Farm Petting Zoo at the San Antonio Zoo is a great place for children to see animals up close. Kids can pet ponies, sheep, goats and other small animals.

The Reptile House is particularly popular for boys. Kids can view snakes and lizards through glass aquariums.

Tiny Tots Nature Spot is a hands-on, interactive area for preschoolers. Kids can feed animals and fish, plant in the garden or explore the seven areas of the exhibit.

The San Antonio Zoo also has a variety of special education and recreational programs for kids. The once a month Feed the Animals program and other EdZoocation activities are geared toward children in various age brackets.
