Dine on Local Delicacies at Jakes Piano Lounge and Steak House
Jake’s Piano Lounge and Steak House located at the Compass Point Inn in Surrey B.C. has to be one of the Lower Mainland’s best kept secrets. My friend and I decided to have dinner there last weekend before taking in the Blues show at Amber Jack’s Pub next door. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed enough to make a second trip the following week to take in an open mike show in the lounge.
The dining room offers a wide selection of tasty entrees and appetizers, using locally grown produce. We started with plates heaped with Salt Spring Island mussels stewed in a savory tomato sauce ($8.50) with a side basket of cranberry and whole wheat breads for dipping. We chose to share an entree of lobster with macaroni and cheese — plenty for two. The choice of wine was a carafe of Cabernet Sauvignon “Circus” for $16. We found all the prices very reasonable for both food and beverages.
The menu is varied, everything from seafood to steaks, salads and an array of delicious appetizers and desserts prepared by chef Javier from Mazatlan. While we dined, we were entertained by the pleasant piano music played by Joe, a pianist who has played all around South East Asia and Dubai. It’s a pleasant atmosphere with tasteful decor and furnishings. All around the walls are hung with a splendid display of art collected by the owner, John Kembi. His son Jake, who manages the dining room and cocktail lounge stopped by to greet us and told us some of the background history of the hotel which was built by his grandfather Jakob. Jakes Steak House is named after the founder and his grandson.
We returned to Jakes a few nights later to take in the Wednesday night open mike with Dave “Boxcar” Gates and guests. This time we sampled the appetizer, starting out with more of those delicious Salt Spring Island mussels, and two of the tantalizing side dishes : Salt Spring Goat Camembert with baked elephant garlic, sundried cranberries, roasted red pepper aloli and another plate of tortilla chips with a combo of melted cheddar, jack and goat cheese, chorizo, topped with fresh ciltrano. Our beverages of choice this night were the imported Carlsberg beer ($6.50)
We’ll definitely go back soon to sample the steaks.
There’s live music in the lounge Wednesday to Saturday evenings. Come and enjoy the wonderful friendly service and elegant atmosphere!
