Photo: Coffeeshop Sign

Details: Dutch coffeeshops display this sign in the window. Each coffeeshop has its individual license number.
Dictionary definition of coffee shop: a small, usually inexpensive restaurant where refreshments and light mals are served.

The Dutch joined coffee + shop and the new word coffeeshop takes a completely new meaning.

The Dutch coffeeshop is a licensed place that sells hash, cannabis and marihuana.  Soft drugs are illegal in the Netherlands but everyone over eighteen is allowed to possess 30 grams of weed.
