Hanami at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

When folks mention cherry blossoms, most immediately think Washington DC.  While DC may be a prime destination for viewing these aromatic delicate pink clouds, NYC is still a formidable contender.  Hanami “rite of spring”, the Japanese cultural tradition of viewing and cherishing each moment of the cherry blossom season, is in full swing until May 4th at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  Stroll under a canopy of over 220 cherry trees, view artwork inspired by cherry blossoms in the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery, and savor special Japanese entrees at the Terrace Café.

A not-to-miss highlight of these festivities is the 27th annual Sakura Matsuri (Saturday, May 2–Sunday, May 3, 2008), a two-day festival celebrating the striking beauty of these trees with a weekend of Japanese culture, arts, and performances for all ages. This year promises more than 60 events and performances. Enjoy traditional Japanese music and dance, taiko drumming, ikebana flower arranging, cooking demonstrations, tea ceremonies, craft demonstrations, and workshops for both adults and children.  All of this is free with Garden admission (Adults $12, Children under 12 free).  Take the B or Q train to Prospect Park Station.
