Go Green for Earth Day in Edinburgh
April 22nd is Earth Day, and Edinburgh is a participant, naturally, given its great relationship with the outdoors. Here are five great ideas for things to do outdoors while in Edinburgh for Earth Day:
- Go for a Walk. We’ve talked about great walking ideas, such as the Water of Leith or the Union Canal, but why not spend some extra time exploring the streets? One perrenial favourite that tourists often overlook is the New Town. Just wander and let the stunning Georgian architecture guide your way. Don’t miss Stockbridge, too, for good coffee and pubs.
- Enjoy the new grass in Princes Street Gardens. They’ve just laid new grass lawns in Princes Street gardens, to replace sections damaged by all of the traffic at the winter festivals. It’s looking fantastic, and with the flowers in bloom, there’s no place better.
- Get a new perspective. Edinburgh is one of the most magestic cities in Europe, with a sweeping skyline from many viewpoints. Here’s an idea for a new view: check out the Salisbury Crags and the Old Town from the Old Carlton Cemetary. You can see the ocean from here too. Just head east on Waterloo Place from the east end of Princes Street and after crossing the bridge where Calton Road runs below, head up the steep concrete stairs to your right.
- Shop Carbon Neutral. is a fantastic shop for vitamins, tea, coffee, rice and a whole other assortment of diet-conscious and allergy-friendly goods. Best of all – they’re carbon netural. You’ll find two options – one on Broughton Street in the New Town and one in Tollcross.
- Dress Eco-Friendly Fool, in Morningside, offers the latest fair trade fashions and eco-friendly couture. If you ever needed an excuse to wander over to this fantastic neighbourhood, this is the perfect timing.
What will you be doing for Earth Day?
