Planeteye’s Guide To Cheap Eats
Recommending good places to eat in every city we feature is
something we do consistently, but this month we asked our team of
travel writers to find those simple yet delicious restaurants around
town.
They came back with a little bit of everything: from street food,
restaurants in inexpensive neighbourhoods or great deals in otherwise
fine restaurants.
In our Cheap Eats guide you’ll surely find a way to eat on a
budget.
Recommendations from our Travel Writers
Amsterdam: Stretch Your Shrunken Budget
Is your passion shopping and chocolate cake? And have you
just discovered that your budget is not credit crunch proof? Are those
luxuries no longer affordable for you? And are you now looking for a
cheap eat and a budget place to shop? I’ll let you into a well-kept
secret.
Atlanta: Cheap Eats in Atlanta
Looking for deals but don’t want to give up nice places?
Here to Serve Restaurants offers some cheap eating out opportunities
Barcelona: Cheap Eats in Pricey Barcelona
Barcelona can be hard on the budget traveler. Everything
in the city is twice as much as it would be in any neighboring
village…
Boston is a college city- so there are plenty of
inexpensive restaurants that serve good – and sometimes intriguing
food choices – in the $10 or less per person range…
Buenos Aires: A Street Delight
It is often said that Buenos Aires was built facing away
from the Río de la Plata, the brown-coloured river that was the focal
point of so much of its early history.
Edinburgh: Cheap Eats Edinburgh
The UK is certainly not known for its inexpensive cuisine,
but sometimes meals can really break your budget. However, thankfully
here in Edinburgh we have food…
Hawaii: Wahoo’s Fish Taco
Some Punahou classmates of mine, the Pietsch’s, came up
with the brilliant idea of bringing the mainland franchise, Wahoo’s
Fish Taco, to the islands a few years ago…
Lisbon: Excellent Cheap Restaurants
When you’re in a strange town for a while and you’re
eating out everyday, cheap options are always welcomed. At lunch you
won’t have any problems. Just head to a business area and find
yourself a busy restaurant. Since we lunch out everyday, there’s
usually a lunch menu. Expect to pay around 8€.
London is full of kebab shops. Some are good, some are
passable, some are dire. (That’s quite authentic; in Istanbul, too,
some of the kebab shops are good, and some are not recommended for
your patronage.)
Los Angeles: Eating Cheaply in Los Angeles
Long known as a city for well-heeled foodies who will pay
a small fortune for teeny plates of nouvelle cuisine, Los Angeles is
also a land filled with cheap and filling meals and snacks. Just look
around.
Miami: Miami’s Affordable Dining Diversity
Miami often seems less than a friendly place to take the
time to discover affordable or even cheap dining options. Between the
traffic and drive to get into town or across town, and paying for
parking, the cost can never be cheap unless you happen to be
pedestrian and make do with what you can find in your neighborhood.
New York: Sandro’s NYC Pasta Bonanza
You may have already heard that Sandro’s serves up some no
nonsense Italian food at reasonable prices. Dishes like fried ricotta
and spaghettini al limone (lemon pasta) are generously capped off with
complimentary cookies and a glass of their house grappa.
Rio de Janeiro: Pizza Gets a Makeover
Cariocas are known for their somewhat irreverent approach
to the art of pizza-making, and the latest snack craze in Rio takes
this trend one step further. Not content with pioneering the concept
of chocolate-covered pizzas and pizzas covered in ketchup and
mayonnaise, the city is now awash with spots serving pizza in the form
of a cone.
San Francisco: San Francisco Loves You (For Cheap!)
Although you may be surprised to learn that this Mexican
restaurant is not in the Mission District, do not doubt Nick’s legacy.
Although this restaurant is perched up on Russian Hill, without a
popsicle cart or piñata store in sight, take the trip for a memorable
taco experience.
Seattle: Dick’s Drive In
You won’t catch me at any of the chain burger joints –
they are just not my style. But there are times when I really have a
craving for a goopy, greasy cheeseburger. And a side of fries. When
that urge strikes me, I head off to Dick’s Drive In.
South Florida: Cheap Eats in Florida
Although I truly enjoy 5-star dining, I do love finding a
bargain. When it comes to restaurants, it might mean planning ahead,
planning what time you eat or knowing where to find the best deals.
Sydney: Eat at Underbelly Hangout Grotta Capri
The quirky Grotta Capri has been featured in films like
Muriel’s Wedding, Son of the Mask, and The Night We Called it a Day.
These days the Kensington Italian restaurant is masquerading as the
favourite haunt of Underbelly’s Robert Trimboli.
Vancouver: Fast Food, Free Entertainment
When I’m downtown, I always look forward to stopping at my
favourite street vendor’s at Burrard and Robson streets to buy a
Bavarian Smokie, pile on the fried onions, sauerkraut, mustard and
dill pickles, grab a bag of chips and an iced tea, then cross the
street and sit on the stone bench by the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Washington D.C.: Street Food at Julia’s Empanadas
For great tasting and really, really cheap authentic South
American-influenced empanadas, check out one of the three Julia’s
Empanadas locations in Washington, DC
