Walker Bay Nature Reserve

If you are a water baby then Walker Bay Nature Reserve is the best place for you to hide away from the craziness of the city found along the south-western Cape coast, just east of Hermanus.

Walker Bay Nature Reserve is made up of five coastal areas lying between Hermanus and Struisbaai. Stretching about 1 000ha in size and has a coastline of 17km featuring a long white sandy beach. Just north-west of the reserve lies the scenic Klein River lagoon which is a fantastic place for enjoying water sports, fishing and just relaxing in the great African sun.

There are significant records and proof that Middle Stone Age people from approximately 85 000 to 65 000 years ago inhabited a local cave in the area known as Klipgat meaning stone hole. The area also boasts a wonderful Mediterranean climate and have great hot sunny days during summer and mild cool days during winters so it is nice to explore this area all year round.

The area has been cleared from all alien plants that are of no benefit to the indigenous plant life know as Fynbos meaning fine bush – there are several thousands different species. A host of ocean birds can be seen but on land you will find bushbuck, clawless otter, duiker, steenbok and grysbok

Unfortunately fires and camping is not allowed in the reserve and so the best place to find accommodation is in Hermanus, Stanford or any of the other small towns in the Overberg that surrounds Walker Bay Nature Reserve.

This is definitely a place where the whole family can let their hair now and just have fun.
