Staatsoper Berlin

For getting a bit of culture into you, there’s not much that can beat the opera. Getting dressed up, hobnobbing with a champagne in hand and listening to buxom ladies belt out famous aria’s is one of those must-have experiences. So why not have it in Berlin? We have three opera houses after all.

Yes, three. The Staatsoper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper and the Kömische Oper. Culture here is taken very seriously.

Most people are thinking of the Staatsoper Berlin when they talk about the Berlin opera house. This is the impressive classic building at Bebelplatz on Unter den Linden. The one that you probably want to see an opera in if you’re in the city for a short time because this is the one with the classic facade and impressive address.

Booking tickets is easy online, with a nifty little interface you can have in English which shows you all the seats still available for whatever shows are on. If you would like to have seats together I would recommend booking more than two weeks ahead, actually I would recommend booking more than two months ahead, especially if you are in a group of four or more.

Prices range from 5€ to 300€ depending on the seat. Yes, you read that right. 5€ seats are available if you are there to listen to the music only and don’t mind staring at a pillar or wall for the event. Of course, if you are just there to hobnob then it doesn’t really matter does it?

The program is constantly changing and actually offers quite a variety. Through the month of April, for example, they are performing Aida, Lohengrin, Macbeth, The Magic Flute, have the ballet dancing Caravaggio as well as orchestra and choir performances. So there is something for everyone. You can pick up the current program at any of the information stands at the museums, as well as theflyer stands near the toilets in most bars or just go along to their website.
