Earth Day 2009

Cape Town was put into partial darkness on Saturday 28 March 2009 as we joined in with people in 1000 cities all over the world when as we united as one to save energy and our planet.

We decided to pack a picnic and witness this great event from one of Cape Town’s majestic Table Mountain. It was a glorious autumn evening as we parked the land rover and set out our picnic over looking the Cape Town City Centre. We arrived at about 7pm so we could see the light all on and then the effects of everyone uniting as lights were switched off.

In true Cape Town style we were abit late some lights started going out at 8:30pm and a few more at 8:35pm everyone from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to Table Mountain turned off the lights in solidarity.

The waterfront hosted a free concert that was powered by “peddle power” for days before the event volunteers peddled away to create enough power for the concert.

Unfortunately there will always be a few non eco friendly people who did not turn their lights off but hopefully we will convince them to join us next year on earth day. We do believe that with more publicity and a more advanced educational campaign we will make an even bigger different next year.

Earth hour was an overall success and we were very impressed with how many people participated
