The Oscar Wilde Irish Pub
Happy St Patrick’s Day!
Many years ago I spotted a poster advertising Guinness which went along the lines of “Your mother’s brother’s uncle’s best friend’s former roommate’s dog was an Irish Setter? Close enough!” So let’s get out and celebrate, hey?
Now, admittedly, I tend to avoid Irish Pubs when travelling. You’re here to experience the local life and culture, right? Sure, it’s one place you are guaranteed to find native English speakers but it’s not exactly tramping the road less travelled. But on St Patrick’s Day I will say… why not? There be Guinness.
There are a few Irish pubs in the city but I thought I’d motion you in the direction of the Oscar Wilde. Right on Friedrichstrasse and next to the U-bahn station Oranienburger Tor, it’s easy to get to and quite central. Atmosphere, decoration, food, beer and staff are exactly what you’ll find in any Irish Pub anywhere in the world. It’s a friendly, familiar place and if you’re craving a bit of Shepherd’s Pie or some real Fish & Chips it’s a decent stop. They’ve a selection of UK imported beers and prices are reasonable, bordering on cheap, for Mitte.
Today I imagine it will be packed to the rafters, so either head in early (and I’m thinking 11am could already be too late) or be prepared for await at the bar. Oh, and if you’re going up there anyway, make mine a cider thanks.
