Cheap Eats Edinburgh

The UK is certainly not known for its inexpensive cuisine, but sometimes meals can really break your budget.  However, thankfully here in Edinburgh we have food that suits all budgets, from discount dining to luxury establishments.  However, there are plenty of cheap eats in the city – here are some recommendations:

Eating a baked potato on Jeffrey Street outside the Tempting Tattie – by Sakia Van De Nieuwenhof

Tempting Tattie

Anyone who is a regular Edinburgh Guide reader knows that I’m a huge fan of the Tempting Tattie; you can easily get a oversized meal for less than £5.  It’s a classic Edinburgh experience, so even if you’re not so concerned about the cash, try it anyway.  You’ll be glad you did.

Bene’s

Another Old Town stalwart is the classic Scottish “chippy”, or fish and chips shop, known as Bene’s.  They’re open until about 1AM on the weekends and serve up tasty made-to-order pizzas as well as fish and chips.  Try the local favourite, chips and cheese (with salt and sauce) – not very healthy but cheap and delicious!

Standing Order

It might be hard to believe that a cheap eat can be found on Edinburgh’s posh George Street, which is lined with expensive bars, clubs, and restaurants, but one of the cheapest pubs in the centre is here: The Standing Order.  It’s loud, crazy, and busy, but you can get rock bottom pub grub for rock bottom prices.  They run food-and-drink deals so be sure to check out the specials menu on the boards above the main bar before ordering.  The venue was formerly a bank, which explains the unusual array of rooms, including an area which was formerly a bank vault.

Do you have a favourite cheap eat in Edinburgh?  Bon Appetit!
