Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in the Irish Channel

Just when you though Uptown parades were over and that you could put away your blinky beads, St. Patrick’s Day announces itself in a big, big way in the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans. A city with proud Irish roots, New Orleans is also a city with a proud Irish route. Since 1947, the Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day Club has marched with pride and raised money throughout the year in the Big Easy for non-profit organizations like Special Olympics, the Chrones Benefit Golf Tournament, and others.

A membership of over 1,400 individuals continues the success of the group, and the parade and subsequent celebrations are always fun. Green beer flows at that Irish Channel haunt Parasol’s, and starting at 12 PM, cabbages and other Irish produce will roll. A proper Irish dinner can be scavenged from among the green and orange beads that’ll fly down the streets, the circuitous route taking the group (and the crowd) from Magazine and Felicity to Jackson to St. Charles, then back to Louisiana and Magazine.

So either take cover or bring a shopping basket! But most of all, enjoy the novelty of St. Patty’s Day in New Orleans, where every holiday is a reason to take to the streets.
