Sydney Council Plans Cycleway on Kent Street
The City of Sydney council is planning a new separated cycleway along Kent Street in the CBD. The move takes the city a step closer to the Liveable Green Network mapped out in the Sustainable Sydney 2030 Vision.
The council is currently drawing up plans for a two-way cycleway for the eastern side of the street. The path, which will be separated from cars and pedestrians, will run from Druitt Street to Clarence Street near Observatory Hill. There it will link to the cycleway across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The route will also provide access to the inner west through the King Street cycleway, which is currently under construction, and the cycleway planned for Union Street in Pyrmont.
“Major cities around the world have found that delivering safe, separated bicycle lanes has dramatically increased their number of cyclists. The people of Sydney told us they wanted a city with connected networks for walking and cycling. The new Kent Street cycleway will be one more step forward toward an integrated cycle network that is vital for encouraging the switch to sustainable transport,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
The cycleway designs, which will be subject to public consultation and RTA approval, are expected to be ready in late 2009. Construction on the cycleway should commence in mid 2010.
