Tales from the Road…Eating at Two Old Favorites in Mobile, Ala.
If you travel a lot, you know that the best way to really learn about a destination is to go where the locals go. Therefore, it’s no surprise the two places that I visited today while in Mobile, Ala.
“I’ll take two brownies, a petit four and that king crown cookie to go, please.”
I came across Pollman’s Bake Shop
(yes, listed on the “100 Places to Eat in Alabama Before You Die“) by chance while I was doing an Internet search and I like what I saw. So, I knew when I drove by the one located on Broad Street, I had to stop in. And I’m glad I did.
Known for their brownies, there are other treats to choose from as well. Selections include cookies, donuts, cupcakes, petit fours, sugar cookies with icing- basically if it’s sweet, you’ll probably find it at Pollman’s. And that includes King Cakes and other Mardi Gras treats as well.
“Wow- now that’s a hot dog.”
And while
I’m discussing food, I’m going to fast forward my day to lunch time to talk about Dew Drop Inn. There are a number of reasons to eat here. It claims to be the oldest restaurant in Mobile, it’s affordable and well, frankly, the food is good. Dew Drop Inn also holds the honor of being listed on the “100 Places to Eat in Alabama Before You Die.” However, perhaps the biggest honor is that it’s also on Jimmy Buffet’s list of his Top 10 Cheeseburgers. If you aren’t in the mood for a burger or cheeseburger, be sure to try another one of their best loved items,
the hot dog. It is said that Dew Drop Inn introduced the hot dog to this area. You’ll also find a great selection of sandwiches, po’boys, seafood and diner-type dishes. Be sure to check the board for daily specials.
