Tales from the Road…Oysters (and More) at Wintzell’s Oyster House in Mobile, Ala.
So, it’s a rainy night in Mobile, Ala., but you know something that will make it less gloomy outside?
Seafood, or more specifically, oysters. ![]()
Yes, that’s right oysters and just not any oysters, but the ones at Wintzell’s Oyster House.
Tonight I learned why it’s listed in the top “100 Places to Eat in Alabama Before You Die” campaign.
Fried, raw, steamed. Monterey, Bienville -well, you get the idea. These are just some of the ways you can order oysters. I highly recommend ordering a
dozen chargrilled ($15.99).
Now, if you like going light like I do at times, try the Famous Buffalo Shrimp ($7.99) listed with the appetizers.
Other choices include crawfish tails ($9.99) and their very popular fried dill pickles($6.99). They also have gumbo, stew and soup selections as well as salad selections. Didn’t order the blackened popcorn shrimp salad ($8.99) or the shrimp chef salad ($9.99), but hopefully there’ll be a next time here.
What about the entrees? Let’s see, there’s fried shrimp ($15.99), stuffed shrimp ($14.99) and grilled Mahi Mahi ($18.99).
Can’t decide? Why not go with a platter. The J.O.($18.99/named after proprietor J. Oliver Wintzell) includes stuffed crab, crab claws, oysters, shrimp and fish, available fried or broiled. There is also a surf and turf platter as well.
If you aren’t in the mood for seafood, there are steak dishes and pasta dishes that are sure to please.
Don’t forget to save room for dessert. Why not try some of their famous bread pudding ($3.99), banana pudding ($3.99) or key lime pie ($3.99)?
Eating out with little ones? Wintzell’s has a kids menu. And if you can’t make it for dinner, they’re also open for lunch during the work week.
