Top Five Affordable Sydney Experiences for Valentine’s Day

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of the commercialism of Valentine’s Day. Don’t think I’m a bitter singleton who hates seeing sappy couples. But after nearly three years of marriage, I resent restaurants demanding I pay $100 or more to choose from their restricted menus. Personally, I’m planning on buying some delicious food and cooking my own romantic feast! But if you do want to get out and enjoy the city, there are still some affordable options in Sydney.
Here are my top five ways to pamper your partner in the city without spending a fortune.
The Royal Botanic Gardens is a stunning spot, and a perennial favourite with romantic Sydneysiders. There are some beautiful flowers to look at while it’s light, and some gorgeous places to picnic as you watch the sun go down. The Harbour is the perfect backdrop for those cute coupled-up photos!
The St George OpenAir Cinema will screen the romantic comedy Bride Wars. The giant screen, with the lights of the city and harbour in the background sure beats your average chain theatre! Presales are all sold out but door sales are available on the night from 6:30 pm.
The restaurants are upping the prices for Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t mean you should discount Sydney Tower altogether. The views from this 250-meter high observation deck are beautiful, and well worth the $25 ticket price. That also includes complimentary tickets to the OzTrek ride.
Go for a walk together – it’s completely free! One of my favourites is to start from Kiribilli, walk across the Harbour Bridge, through the Rocks, and around the Opera House. Make sure you set out at night and hold hands for just the right level of romance.
When was the last time you saw the sun set? Head out to one of Sydney’s many lookouts and enjoy one with someone special this Saturday. I recommend North Head Lookout in Manly, with its views across Sydney Harbour, back towards Manly Cove, and towards South Head.
