Order of the Thistle

If you happen to find yourself strolling along the Royal Mile and happen to take note of the interestingly-formed crown above Saint Giles church (yes, it is supposed to represent the crown of thorns), step inside, as you will be glad you did.

Saint Giles is a wonderful church – the stained glass windows remind me of various famous painters – one could easily be a Monet, another a Picasso.  The church has a wonderful gift shop with lots of interesting bits and bobs, and the best part of all – the Thistle Chapel – where all of those in the Order of the Thistle (the highest order of chivalry in Scotland) are represented.  All official ceremonies take place here, and this wooden paradise is a delight to explore.  Often the church has volunteers giving tours and information, which is helpful given the complex history of Scotland and its relationship to Great Britain and the United Kingdom – ask one of the staff if someone is available.

Read more about Saint Giles on their website; there is also an excellent Wikipedia article on the fascinating history of the Order of the Thistle.
